Quick arrival summary

The simplest sequence is: finish the formal arrival process, collect every bag, get connected, confirm your exact destination, then activate the transport plan. Do not split the group between baggage reclaim and a pickup area or leave one person guarding luggage while everyone else searches outside.

  1. Follow the airport and airline signs for the arrival, border, customs, and baggage steps that apply to your flight.
  2. Deal with missing or damaged hold baggage through the airline or its ground handler before leaving the controlled baggage area.
  3. Connect using roaming, a prepared SIM/eSIM, or the airport's official Wi-Fi so that you can receive driver and accommodation messages.
  4. Check the accommodation name, complete street address, contact number, and check-in instructions—not only a map pin or neighbourhood name.
  5. Use the booked transfer instructions, request an app-based ride, visit the authorised taxi channel, or walk to a confirmed rental-car desk.
Main onward transport choices
OptionUseful whenYour first actionWhat must be checked live
Ride-hailingYou have data, a working app, manageable luggage, and a clear destinationRequest only after collecting bags, then follow the post-booking pickup directionsPickup zone, driver, vehicle, availability, and price
Authorised airport taxiYou want a walk-in, staffed arrangement without relying on an appUse the transport kiosk or domestic-arrivals desk identified by ACSAOperator, fare basis, vehicle capacity, and destination
Pre-booked transferYou arrive late, travel as a family or group, need an accessible vehicle, or want a named meeting planConfirm flight number, terminal, meeting instruction, and delay policy before departureDriver contact, exact meeting point, included waiting, and capacity
Rental carThe wider itinerary needs a car and the driver is comfortable starting from the airportUse the booked agency's directions to the central rental facilityDesk hours, documents, deposit, cover, child seat, fuel, and return procedure

No option is universally best. Compare the whole trip through the Cape Town transport overview before deciding whether the first transfer should also determine how you travel for the rest of the stay.

Orient yourself before leaving arrivals

Cape Town International Airport uses domestic and international arrivals areas connected through the Central Terminal Building. Follow the overhead signs for your own flight's process rather than relying on an online floor-plan memory; temporary works and operational routes can change.

  • Baggage first: stay with your group, collect all items, and resolve a baggage problem with the airline or handler before moving landside.
  • Official help: ACSA locates its information desk in Domestic Arrivals and provides iHelp telephones around the terminal for passenger assistance.
  • Meeting someone: exchange the flight number and terminal, then agree on a named sign, desk, or operator instruction. “Outside arrivals” is too vague when a flight or baggage delay changes the timing.
  • Transport signs: distinguish signs for e-hailing/pickup, authorised taxis, shuttles, car rental, and parking. They lead to different operating areas.

ACSA publishes directional airport maps . Use them for orientation, but give live terminal signs and staff instructions priority.

Ride-hailing: verify the live pickup, not an old landmark

ACSA lists Uber and Bolt among authorised airport transport operations. Book only through the platform's official app, after you have your bags and enough connectivity to receive a registration number, driver identity, and exact pickup instructions.

The published parkade guidance currently conflicts

At this review, ACSA's parking page says pickup and e-hailing moved to Parkade 2, while Uber's current passenger page and Cape Town Tourism's airport guide point passengers to Parkade 1. That inconsistency makes a fixed parkade instruction unsafe to memorise. After requesting, follow the provider's current in-app directions and the airport's current e-hailing signs. If they disagree, remain inside and ask the ACSA information desk or use an iHelp telephone.

  1. Check that the app destination is the full accommodation address, including the correct suburb or property entrance.
  2. Use the app's directions after matching with a driver; a general airport map may not identify the live operating zone.
  3. Match the number plate, vehicle make/colour, driver name, and photo before opening the door.
  4. Do not enter a vehicle because someone in the terminal or pickup area claims to be an app driver. ACSA says e-hailing is app-booked and warns passengers against unsolicited offers.
  5. If a driver asks for a different meeting place, keep communication in the app and accept the change only if it follows current airport signs and remains in the official pickup system.

Check the platform's current CPT passenger pickup directions and ACSA's live parking and pickup notice on the day.

Authorised taxis and pre-booked transfers

Authorised airport taxi

ACSA instructs arriving passengers to use Authorised Airport Taxis and documents a walk-in service through transport kiosks and the domestic-arrivals desk in the Central Terminal Building. Use that staffed channel, confirm the operator and fare basis before departure, and decline anyone who independently approaches you with a ride offer.

The operator list, hours, and contacts are changeable. Use ACSA's current authorised transport page instead of a copied list.

Private or accommodation transfer

A pre-booked transfer can be the lowest-friction choice for a late arrival, a family with child seats, a group with several bags, a traveller who needs an accessible vehicle, or a first night outside the central city. It is useful only when the meeting plan is precise.

  • Give the operator the flight number and arrival terminal, not only the scheduled landing time.
  • Confirm whether the driver waits in arrivals or communicates after baggage collection, and agree on a fallback if the flight or bags are delayed.
  • Confirm passenger and luggage capacity, child-restraint needs, mobility equipment, and whether the vehicle can serve the property's actual entrance.
  • Keep the operator and accommodation contacts offline as well as in chat or email.

Public transport: the direct MyCiTi airport service is suspended

There is currently no operating direct MyCiTi airport-to-city service. MyCiTi's own airport page marks the service as temporarily suspended, and its suspension notice dates the withdrawal from 1 December 2022. Old articles may still describe the A01 route, its station, frequency, fares, or transfer at Civic Centre; do not plan an arrival around those details.

Recheck the official MyCiTi airport-service status shortly before travel. Unless that page explicitly confirms a restart, arrange another mode from the airport. MyCiTi can still be useful later where your city journeys match its active network; use the official app or journey planner for those trips after reaching your base.

A bus station is not proof of a running service

Physical signs, an old downloadable guide, or a route number found in search results do not override the current suspension notice. Verify the service itself, not only the infrastructure.

Car rental: collect only if the wider itinerary needs it

ACSA says the central car-rental facilities are in front of the Transport Plaza and Central Terminal Building, reached through pedestrian subways on either side of the terminal. Its current car-rental page lists the concession operators; confirm the booked agency, collection instructions, and desk availability directly before the flight.

  • Bring the licence, payment card, identification, and booking documents the rental company specifies. Do not assume a digital card or licence will be accepted.
  • Before leaving, record existing damage, understand the fuel policy, insurance/excess, deposit, additional-driver rules, roadside channel, and exact return process.
  • South Africa drives on the left. Adjust mirrors and navigation while stationary, and take time to understand the vehicle before joining airport traffic.
  • Ask how parking, tolls on any planned route, refuelling, and after-hours return are handled rather than assuming they are included.
  • Do not leave luggage visible during stops. Read the driving section of the Cape Town Safety Guide before the first route.

A central stay may not require a car every day. Compare the parking and repeated journeys for your chosen base through the where-to-stay hub, then rent only for the days that benefit.

Getting to common visitor areas

Traffic, road works, incidents, weather, and the precise property entrance make static transfer times unreliable. Use the following as a mode-planning guide, then check the live route after landing.

Planning the first transfer by destination type
DestinationUseful starting choicesConfirm before landing
Cape Town CBD / City BowlApp-booked ride, authorised taxi, or pre-booked transfer; rental only if the later itinerary needs itExact street and property entrance, check-in timing, parking if driving
V&A WaterfrontDoor-to-door ride, taxi, or transfer usually keeps the arrival simpleHotel or apartment entrance and after-hours access
Atlantic SeaboardRide-hailing, taxi, or transfer; a rental may suit a wider peninsula planSpecific suburb and address, because “Atlantic Seaboard” is not a pickup destination
Southern SuburbsDirect ride, taxi, transfer, or rental depending on later journeysProperty entrance, live navigation, and whether the stay includes parking
Northern suburbsDirect ride, taxi, transfer, or rental; pre-book for a late arrival or special vehicle requirementExact suburb and address—the area covers widely separated destinations
Stellenbosch / WinelandsPre-booked transfer, confirmed taxi/ride, or rental for a self-drive itineraryProvider service area, luggage capacity, late check-in, and responsible transport for later tastings

Do not use a quoted airport time as the foundation of the first evening. Keep arrival day light, then use the itinerary hub and things-to-do hub to group later days geographically.

Late-night arrivals and flight disruptions

Before a late arrival

  • Confirm that the accommodation expects you, how access works after reception closes, and who answers if the flight is delayed.
  • Pre-book transport when the group, luggage, child-seat, or accessibility requirement would be difficult to solve on arrival.
  • Check the provider's operating availability and delay/waiting policy; do not assume a desk, vehicle class, or rental counter is available through the night.
  • Keep the complete address, booking reference, driver/provider contact, and fallback plan downloaded or written down.

When the flight changes

Use your airline as the primary source for the flight and baggage consequences, and check ACSA live flight information for the airport view. Tell the transfer, rental company, and accommodation as soon as the new timing is credible. Ask what happens to a reserved pickup—flight tracking, waiting, rebooking, and cancellation terms differ by provider.

If the app or network fails, remain in the terminal and use the ACSA information desk or an iHelp telephone. The official information-desk page lists the airport switchboard as 021 937 1200.

Connectivity and accessibility

Getting connected

ACSA documents free airport Wi-Fi at Cape Town International. Its current instructions identify the “# AIRPORTS FREE” network and complimentary access subject to time and data limits. Check the login portal for the live allowance and avoid entering banking or other sensitive information on a network you cannot verify.

Set up roaming or an eSIM before departure if the first transfer depends on an app. If buying a local SIM after landing, check the airport's current facilities and the provider's activation requirements rather than assuming a shop will be open when your flight arrives. Keep the address and phone numbers available offline.

Assistance and accessible ground transport

ACSA documents ramps, lifts, wheelchair access, and accessible facilities. It tells passengers who need help boarding or leaving the aircraft to arrange that assistance with the airline when booking. The Cape Town information desk lists ACSA Special Needs Passenger assistance at 021 935 3737, and iHelp telephones are available in the terminal.

Airport assistance does not automatically reserve an accessible vehicle to the accommodation. Tell the taxi, transfer, ride platform, or rental company exactly what is needed: step-free boarding, space for a wheelchair or scooter, transfer assistance, and the dimensions or weight of mobility equipment where relevant. Get confirmation before travel and ask the accommodation about the arrival entrance.

Arriving with children, luggage, and valuables

Children and child restraints

Book around the child, not only the number of seats. Tell the provider each child's age and restraint requirement and ask it to confirm the specific seat before travel. Do not assume a ride-hailing, taxi, transfer, or rental vehicle automatically includes a suitable restraint. For a rental, confirm fitment, availability, and charges directly; if bringing your own, check airline carriage rules.

Keep one adult responsible for the children while another handles baggage and transport messages. ACSA says baby-changing facilities and amenities for young children are available in the terminals, but check live signage rather than delaying an arranged pickup unnecessarily.

Luggage and personal safety

  • Keep passports, phones, payment cards, and essential medication in controlled hand luggage.
  • Do not leave bags unattended while buying connectivity, visiting a desk, or finding a pickup zone.
  • Use only the app, authorised desk, or confirmed pre-booked operator. Decline unsolicited transport offers.
  • Verify the vehicle and driver before loading bags; once luggage is in a boot, keep your group with the vehicle.
  • Avoid displaying valuables during the transfer and do not ask the driver to leave luggage visible during an intermediate stop.

Arrival checklist

Before landing

  • Save the complete accommodation address, contact, check-in instructions, and entrance details offline.
  • Choose the first-transfer mode and keep a fallback that does not depend on the same app or contact.
  • Confirm flight tracking, waiting, luggage capacity, child seats, and accessibility needs with a pre-booked operator.
  • Prepare roaming/eSIM or know how to use the verified airport Wi-Fi.
  • Check the airline, ACSA live flight information, MyCiTi airport-service status, and pickup guidance close to travel.

After landing

  • Complete the applicable arrival process and collect every bag before activating pickup.
  • Resolve missing or damaged baggage with the airline or handler before leaving reclaim.
  • Confirm the destination and current pickup instructions while still inside the terminal.
  • Use official signs, an authorised desk, or app instructions; decline unsolicited rides.
  • Match driver and vehicle details before boarding, then tell the accommodation you are on the way if required.
